Bhutanese Dating Platform
A culturally-sensitive dating platform designed specifically for Bhutanese users, combining modern matchmaking with traditional values and customs.
Bridging Tradition and Modern Dating
AroGaro (meaning "meet together" in Dzongkha) is Bhutan's first culturally-sensitive dating platform, designed to honor traditional values while embracing modern relationship-building. The platform respects Bhutanese customs and family dynamics while providing a safe space for meaningful connections.
Working with community leaders and young Bhutanese users, I designed an experience that balances privacy, cultural sensitivity, and authentic connection-building, creating a platform that feels both familiar and forward-thinking.
Cultural Sensitivity in Digital Dating
Dating apps in Bhutan faced unique challenges: the culture values family involvement, privacy is paramount due to the small community, and traditional dating norms differ significantly from Western models.
- •Strong stigma around online dating in traditional communities
- •Privacy concerns in a small, interconnected society
- •Need to balance modern convenience with traditional values
- •Family involvement expectations in relationship formation
Respectful, Intent-Driven Matching
Created a platform emphasizing serious relationships over casual dating, with robust privacy controls and features aligned with Bhutanese values and relationship customs.
- ✓Intent-based matching focusing on long-term relationships
- ✓Granular privacy controls and selective profile visibility
- ✓Values-based matching incorporating cultural compatibility
- ✓Community guidelines reflecting Bhutanese social norms

Designing for Cultural Context
Cultural research is non-negotiable: Spent 2 months understanding Bhutanese dating norms before designing a single screen. This deep research prevented major missteps.
Privacy must be granular: In tight-knit communities, one-size-fits-all privacy settings don't work. Users need precise control over their visibility.
Community involvement is crucial: Regular feedback sessions with users and community leaders helped keep the platform aligned with values.
Safety builds trust: Verification features were initially seen as friction but became the most appreciated aspect of the platform.
